NCVPS FEATURED IN CHIEFLINE NEWS ARTICLE FROM WSOCTV

N.C. Online Students Can Graduate Early, or Catch Up
WSOCTV.com (NC) (08/08/08)

Enrollment in the North Carolina Virtual Public School, which was approved by state lawmakers two years ago, surged to almost 13,000 this spring from 4,968 in summer 2007. Students in public middle schools and high schools can take advantage of the program to take Advanced Placement and foreign language courses not available at their schools, obtain college credits, recover missing credits, and even graduate early. The virtual school offers 72 courses online, and Internet phone calls, live video chats, real-time assessments, and live messaging are used to assign and complete coursework. Additionally, students benefit from completing work at home or in school. According to North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson, "A student's address does not determine a student's success. Just like we have social networks, we need schools to be a part of a student's social network. This is just one step in the progression of redefining the place called school."
